Why do people go to therapy?

Many people seek out psychological help because they are struggling to cope with current or past difficulties, which may impede their lives in some way. In this case, therapy can help you to better understand what is causing your distress, and how to manage any mal-adaptive feelings and behaviour. However, you don’t need to be struggling in order to work on yourself. Everyone has some part of themselves or their lives that they want to improve or work on and therapy can be a fantastic tool for self-exploration and self-care. After all, how often do we get the opportunity to reflect on our lives in a space that is completely our own (give or take a therapist).

What to expect

The first two to three sessions always consist of a comprehensive assessment of your current functioning.

This comprises collecting information pertaining (but not limited) to your personal history, medical history, and past family experiences. The assessment stage is vital to building the therapeutic relationship, which is the cornerstone of successful, effective therapy. Its purpose is to ensure that we form a collaborative understanding of what is happening for you at this time in your life, which will then inform how we proceed with any necessary intervention.

The length of therapy depends on a variety of factors and can range from short-term to long-term interventions. As with most things in life, what you put into therapy is related to what you will achieve. While a therapist may facilitate change, at the end of the day, you are the agent who will take responsibility for it.
